What does getting started look like?

Getting started with Wireless OBM is simple.

1. Install the gauges

Fit one approved gauge to the prime mover and one to each trailer axle group. Power them from ignition or accessory circuits and mount them clear of metal obstructions for strong connectivity.

2. Install the telematics device

Mount the V‑DAQ TAG on the windscreen on the same side as the gauges, with a clear line toward the trailers. Connect power using the supplied harness or approved wiring method.

3. Open the app and confirm your trailers

Turn the vehicle on, open the Wireless OBM app, connect to the telematics device and confirm which trailers are being towed. From that point on, live weights are visible and automatically recorded.

What drivers need to do day to day

Drivers use V‑DAQ’s Wireless OBM app when loading or checking weights. In the cab, they view live weights as normal. Around the vehicle, they can switch to Direct Connect Mode for instant readings.

Fleet managers should make trailer pairing confirmation part of pre‑start or pre‑trip procedures to ensure correct pairing every time.

What is Wireless OBM?

Wireless OBM is our product designed and engineered to make on-board weighing simple for drivers, visible for fleet managers, and seamless across multi-trailer combinations.

Drivers can use live axle and gross weight data to load accurately, from inside the cab or around trailers.

What is Direct Connect Mode?

Direct Connect Mode is a new feature in the Wireless OBM (On‑Board Mass) app that allows drivers to connect directly to Right Weigh gauges using their phone. It is designed specifically for loading and unloading activities, where drivers need the freedom to walk around the vehicle and view weight readings with very low latency.

What’s the difference between the default mode and Direct Connect Mode?

The Wireless OBM app normally operates in default mode, where the V‑DAQ TAG collects data from the Right Weigh gauges and sends it to the app for accurate, reliable mass reporting.

Direct Connect Mode is a new feature designed specifically for loading activities. In this mode, drivers connect directly from their phone to the Right Weigh Bluetooth® gauges, giving them instant, real‑time weights while they load.

Why was Direct Connect Mode created for Right Weigh Users?

V-DAQ saw an opportunity to improve the experience of drivers when loading and unloading, specifically their need to currently switch between Wireless OBM and Right Weigh applications. Direct Connect solves this by allowing the phone to connect straight to the Right Weigh Bluetooth gauges. This also helps improve overall connection uptime and faster weight data updates (lower latency).

How does Direct Connect work?

When activated, Direct Connect:

disconnects the Tag from all Right Weigh sensors
allows the phone to connect directly to all available Right Weigh gauges, via Bluetooth
provides fast weight updates
allows the driver to walk around the truck and trailers while staying connected

Once the driver finishes loading, they can exit Direct Connect Mode. The V-DAQ TAG will resume automatically when the vehicle starts moving, or the 40-minute connection timer runs out.

Will this affect Smart OBM reporting or compliance?

No. The new feature is type-approved for Smart OBM, we have just made things more convenient for our customer’s day-to-day operations.

How do I return to the default mode from Direct Connect Mode?

Once the driver finishes loading, they can exit Direct Connect Mode. The default mode will resume automatically when the vehicle starts moving, or the 40-minute connection timer runs out. Users can also switch back to default mode at any time though the app menu.

Are there similarities with the Right Weigh app?

Yes. Direct Connect Mode lets you:

Connect directly to each gauge
Move freely around the vehicle while staying connected
View weights from any Right Weigh Bluetooth® Gauge

Are there any differences in the Android and iOS experience?

Overall, the Wireless OBM app works the same on both Android and iOS. In Direct Connect Mode, your phone connects directly to each Right Weigh gauge. Because iPhones and iPads don’t support long‑range Bluetooth, they may not reach every gauge on longer truck/trailer combinations. iPhone users will only see the gauges their device can connect to directly.

How do I know if a gauge is connected?

The Wireless OBM app displays live axle and gross weight data for each truck/trailer combination. Each gauge card includes a coloured circle that shows its connection status:

Yellow logo: Searching

How do I enable this on my phone?

Open the Wireless OBM app on your mobile phone and make sure you’re within 10 meters of the V‑DAQ TAG in your vehicle.
Connect to the Truck though the app
Open the side menu and select Direct Connect Mode.
Your device will temporarily disconnect from the V‑DAQ TAG and connect directly to the Right Weigh Bluetooth® gauges for instant, accurate weights—perfect for loading outside the cab.
When you’re done, exit Direct Connect Mode from the side menu.

If you forget to exit, don’t worry—the V‑DAQ TAG will reconnect automatically once the vehicle starts moving or the connection timer expires.
